I know that I have completely ignored Grace in Small Things for the past few days. It isn't because I don't have anything to put down, I've just been too tired and Thanksgiving Day preparations have taken over.
We went out last night and bought everything that we are going to need for the big day, except wine. The only thing that I don't like about Maryland is the fact that you can't buy wine and beer in the grocery store. How weird. I don't even really think about it anymore until I've been out to my home state of Washington where I walk into the stores now and say, "whoa, you can buy wine here, I totally forgot!" Then I get home and walk into the store and say, "Dammit, why can't we just have wine in our grocery stores!". I recently got back from the good ole Northwest so the no-wine-in-the-grocery-store heartache is still fresh. That said, the wine will either be purchased tonight or tomorrow night. It will depend on if we actually feel like venturing out in this gross, crap weather.
Tonight I am going to get the apple pie out of the way. Last time we hosted Thanksgiving at our house my apple pie was a complete fail. Probably because we started drinking while I was making it. This year I intend on redeeming myself. I really do know how to make pie. At least I used to. Tonight will tell and thankfully my in laws wouldn't care one way or another.
In fact, I need to go get started now.
My grace for today:
1. In laws who won't judge me on whether my pie passes or fails.
2. One more day of work before a long weekend of food, wine and canasta.
3. Magic Eraser (I really am in love with those things!)
4. Dakota's face (he's one of my "kids" at work. I would put a pic up but the uploader is still giving me crap and I don't feel like taking the time to figure it out.)
5. I have the best job ever. (one of these days I'll post about it...)

Turkey Day!
at
3:40 PM
Thanksgiving is afoot! The "to do" list is shrinking - though not as fast as it could be because I'm sitting here on the computer - and the shopping list is growing!
I must admit, we are last minute Turkey day shoppers. It's true. And it will probably never change because the one year that we did plan ahead and actually ordered our turkey in advance, we got screwed. They had zero turkeys in the size that we ordered when we went to pick ours up. They had small or super extra gigantor large. We took a small one to cook at a later date - since we had already paid for it - and went off to the grocery store and bought one in the size that we wanted. So down with pre-planning and onward with "wingin' it".
I would love to sit here and say that we have all of these outside the box, lovely, inventive dishes on our Thanksgiving Day menu-- Wait, no I wouldn't. Because I like my Thanksgiving tried and true. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, roasted sweet potatoes, some form of green vegetable, rolls, apple pie, pumpkin pie, done. But I will be making the majority of it from scratch. Hopefully I will do a better job of documenting it this year.
With that, I really better tick off the rest of this "to do" list. Husband will be home in a few hours.

Public Service Announcement:
As I mentioned before, there is another blogger out there moonlighting under my alias, Darth Mama. This person took over my old blog address and I realized recently that some people still have that old blog address linked to their blogs.
I make this point because I would be mortified if anyone thought that the new "Darth Mama" has anything to do with me. I don't think that parenting is awful, my kid doesn't have ADHD and if she did I wouldn't use it as any kind of excuse as to why my kid doesn't do anything around the house, I have absolutely no guilt in making my kid do what she needs to do around the house when I feel the need to ask her and in my house, the adults are in charge, not the child.
So, if you still have a link to the darthmama.blogspot address on your blog roll, it isn't me!

GIST 3/365
at
8:33 PM
1. Janie only went ballistic on me for about a minute today and I was able to quiet her myself.
Janie is one of my boss's dogs. She is a 5 year old boxer, and she is deaf. I've never dealt with a deaf dog before so I'm still working on doing the correct hand signals for her. She does this weird thing where she will suddenly start whining and then go into a barking fit directly at you (even does it to boss's husband). I had to have my boss come regulate the situation yesterday. Today Janie and I worked it out on our own. Yay!
2. The Teenager completely lost her mind when she opened the perfume box (see GIST below if you are confused by this statement) to find her new ipod inside. I'm pretty sure that she almost cried. hehehe!
3. The weather the last two days has been beautiful. This is fabulous because I started my new job yesterday which primarily consists of hanging out outside with a big group of dogs. It has been a great way to kick things off.
4. I like my bangs. This is important because I only just got them and I cut them myself. The chance that I would dislike my bangs (and/or screw them up completely) was high.
5. Did I mention that I have pretty new china to use on Thanksgiving?!

GIST 2/365
at
10:13 PM
1. Finding a new wine to love. In this case, Cupcake Vineyards - Sauvignon Blanc.
2. Getting the new china out to use for the first time, for our first Thanksgiving as a married couple, in our first very own home.
3. Knowing that The Teenager already knows about the bottle of Juicy Couture perfume that is sitting upstairs waiting to be unwrapped tomorrow, her birthday. She was with me when I bought it. What she doesn't know is that the perfume bottle has been removed from the box and has been replaced with the ipod that she has been hoping beyond hope to get for months but didn't beg for because she knows that we are tighter than usual on money due to my not working for a couple of months. I can't wait to see her face.
4. I have a Great Dane to take care of at work. Yes! She is a moose.
5. I officially get paid to play with dogs all day.

Grace in Small Things
at
12:33 AM
I found out about Grace in Small Things through my friend Ashley over at Ashley's Antics. It is something that I have wanted to do ever since she started posting hers on her site months ago. The challenge is to every day, for 365 days, post a list of five things that have graced your life, either on that day or at any time in your life. You can learn more about it here.
I know that I am currently at a place where I can definitely use a daily reminder of exactly why I don't have anything to complain about. So here goes...
GIST - 1/365:
1. Starting Tuesday, I am going to be getting paid to hang out with dogs - the true angels on earth - all day long. It isn't even fair to call this work and I can't wait.
2. Sometimes our greatest teachers come in the form of our children, and I happened to get the greatest of them all.
3. My husband is lying in bed next to me, not thousands of miles away in the desert somewhere. That is big, fat grace and there are moments where I really kick myself for being annoyed at petty little things when there are so many wives out there who are going to bed alone again tonight, and tomorrow night, and the next night, repeat, who would probably give their left eye to have enough time with their husband to get annoyed right about now.
4. This face: (Okay, well a picture of Max, our "horse-dog", should be posted here, but the image upload is not agreeing with me at the current moment).
5. There are only 11 days until Thanksgiving leftovers.
